Sarajevo continues to upgrade its public transport fleet with ten new trolleybuses
Ten new, modern trolleybuses have been delivered to Sarajevo Canton, with five already in regular service following driver training, registration and testing. The vehicles are Solaris Trollino 18 trolleybuses, manufactured by the Polish company Solaris, one of Europe's leading producers of zero-emission public transport vehicles.
Procured through an international tender financed by an €8 million EIB loan, the new 18-metre Trollino trolleybuses combine full accessibility, climate-controlled interiors, real-time passenger information, GPS vehicle tracking, USB charging and video surveillance. A key feature is their ability to operate off-wire thanks to onboard batteries. With a capacity of 120 passengers, including 36 seats, these trolleybuses will make public transport in Sarajevo more reliable, comfortable and user-friendly while reducing emissions.
The new fleet forms part of the broader Sarajevo Canton urban transport modernisation programme, supported by a €75 million EIB loan. It also includes the upgrade and extension of tram and trolleybus networks, the replacement of ageing vehicles and the construction of new tram lines and tracks.
"After decades of underinvestment, Sarajevo is transforming its transport system to make it greener, more efficient and more comfortable for its citizens," said Miha Švent, EIB Representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina. "The project aims to improve road safety and encourage greater use of public transport to create better living conditions and a cleaner environment."
As part of the same programme, jointly supported by the EIB and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Sarajevo received new trams in 2024, marking the first renewal of the tram fleet in four decades.
"Over the past five years, we have procured more than 100 new public transport vehicles and renewed all modes of public transport," said Adnan Šteta, Sarajevo Canton Minister of Transport. "The Solaris trolleybuses are another step towards our goal of providing every citizen and passenger with high-quality, safe and reliable public transport."
